ACUPUNCTURE FOR ATHLETES

Acupuncture is used in the treatment of injuries and musculoskeletal and constitutional imbalances, and is often effective for relieving muscle pain and spasm and improving circulation to tense or injured tissues.

Commonly acupuncture is especially effective for tendon and ligament sprain/strains, and chronic injuries which have been poorly responsive to other types of treatment.

Please refer to other research pages for specifics on Acupuncture for Pain Relief.

Acupuncture assists both weekend warriors and more competitive athletes improve their performance and prevent injuries.

At Acupuncture Brisbane we use a four dimensional approach:

1) The most important uses TCM methods to support (the yin aspect) of the body during training to build muscles, promote liver glycogen storage, and prepare the body for bursts of energy needed during performance.

2) Support (the Yang aspect) to stimulate output at the time of the performance.

3) Support the adrenal system which is often over loaded by the athletes’ nervous energy prior to numerous competitive performances, and during performances especially where explosive exertion takes place or under gladiatorial conditions.

4) Finally, individualising the treatment, taking into account relatively strong versus weaker systems, past history of injuries or recurrent injuries, and other important health issues, which could impact training and performance.

This approach, also allows for customized herbal formulas and acupuncture to assist in both training and competitive activities.

Sports acupuncture helps to keep the normal flow of energy unblocked and "fine-tune the bio-electric system," Acupuncture’s ability to fine-tune and restore the body's balance makes sports acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine a viable preventative therapy.

In 1993, the National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference on acupuncture released an affirmation: "The data in support of acupuncture are as strong as those for many accepted Western medical therapies. One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse side effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other medical procedures used for the same conditions."
